What is the ATPL(A)?

The ATPL(A) is the Airline Transport Pilot Licence for aeroplanes. It is the licence normally required to act as pilot-in-command, or captain, in multi-pilot commercial air transport operations.

Most airline pilots do not receive the full ATPL(A) at the beginning of their career. They usually complete ATPL(A) theoretical knowledge first, then fly as co-pilot with a CPL(A)/IR or MPL(A), and apply for the ATPL(A) once the required experience has been achieved.

Key point: ATPL(A) theory is not the same as holding the full ATPL(A). The full licence normally comes later, after 1,500 hours and the required multi-pilot, PIC/PICUS, cross-country, instrument and night experience.

What does ‘frozen ATPL’ mean?

FROZEN ATPL

Not a separate EASA licence

“Frozen ATPL” is an industry expression. It usually means the pilot has completed ATPL(A) theoretical knowledge and holds the practical qualifications needed to work as a co-pilot, such as CPL(A), IR(A), ME privileges and MCC/APS MCC.

  • Used by many flight schools and airlines as shorthand.
  • Normally associated with first-officer eligibility.
  • Does not allow captain privileges by itself.
  • Becomes “unfrozen” only when the full ATPL(A) issue requirements are met.

FULL ATPL(A)

Issued after experience

The full ATPL(A) is issued by the authority once the pilot meets the required age, theoretical knowledge, experience, licence, rating, medical and skill-test requirements.

  • Minimum age is 21.

  • Requires at least 1,500 hours in aeroplanes.
  • Requires relevant multi-pilot and instrument experience.
  • Allows commander privileges in eligible multi-pilot commercial operations.
Important: MPL(A) is not simply an “airline version of CPL(A)”. It is a competency-based, airline-linked licence designed around multi-crew operations and a specific type-rating environment.

How to obtain it

The ATPL(A) is usually reached in two stages: first the theoretical knowledge credit, later the full licence issue after airline experience.

Obtain a Class 1 medical

Professional airline training should begin only after confirming medical fitness for commercial pilot privileges.

Complete the professional training route

Most pilots reach the airline pathway through a CPL(A)/IR route, integrated training, or an MPL(A) programme.

Pass ATPL(A) theoretical knowledge

The ATPL(A) theory course covers professional airline subjects and must be passed within the applicable examination rules.

Obtain practical first-officer qualifications

Depending on the route, the pilot will normally need CPL(A), IR(A), multi-engine privileges, MCC or APS MCC, Advanced UPRT and operator selection.

Complete type rating and operator training

Before airline line flying, the pilot completes the relevant type rating, operator conversion course and supervised line training.

Build airline flight experience

The competent authority sets or supervises ATPL(A) theoretical knowledge examinations. Students must pass all required subjects within the applicable time and attempt limits before the theory credit can be used for professional progression.

FLIGHT-TIME REQUIREMENT

The 1,500-hour requirement

For ATPL(A) issue, EASA requires at least 1,500 hours of flight time in aeroplanes, with a specific experience breakdown.

Core requirements

  • At least 1,500 hours total flight time in aeroplanes.
  • At least 500 hours in multi-pilot operations.
  • At least 250 hours as PIC, or including PICUS within the permitted limits.
  • At least 200 hours cross-country, with a required PIC or PICUS component.

Additional experience

  • At least 75 hours of instrument time, with limits on instrument ground time credit.
  • At least 100 hours of night flight as PIC or co-pilot.
  • Simulator credit may be permitted within limits.
  • The exact logbook evidence must match the authority’s application requirements.
Important: The 1,500 hours are not just “any 1,500 hours”. The applicant must meet the detailed multi-pilot, PIC/PICUS, cross-country, instrument and night requirements.

PRIVILEDGES AND LIMITATIONS

What can you do with an ATPL(A)?

For ATPL(A) issue, EASA requires at least 1,500 hours of flight time in aeroplanes, with a specific experience breakdown.

Main privileges

  • Exercise the privileges of LAPL(A), PPL(A) and CPL(A).
  • Act as pilot-in-command in commercial air transport on eligible multi-pilot aeroplanes.
  • Act as commander subject to type rating, operator training, recency and company appointment.
  • Progress into airline captain roles where the operator’s requirements are met.

Important limitations

  • A valid aircraft type rating is required for the aircraft operated.
  • A valid Class 1 medical is required for commercial privileges.
  • Operator conversion, command training and line checks may still be required.
  • ATPL(A) does not remove recency, proficiency check or company training obligations.

VALIDITY AND RENEWAL

Does the ATPL(A) expire?

The ATPL(A) licence itself is not normally treated like a type rating with a fixed expiry date. The ability to use it depends on valid type ratings, a valid Class 1 medical certificate, language proficiency where applicable, recent experience and operator training compliance.

Important: The aircraft type rating has its own validity and must be revalidated by proficiency check before expiry. If it expires, renewal normally requires assessment, refresher training as required and a proficiency check.
