What is the MPL(A)?

The MPL(A) is the Multi-Crew Pilot Licence for aeroplanes. It is designed specifically for pilots trained from the beginning to operate as co-pilot in multi-pilot airline operations.

Unlike the modular CPL(A) route, the MPL(A) is a continuous, competency-based course delivered by an approved training organisation that is part of, or has a specific arrangement with, a commercial air transport operator.

Key point: The MPL(A) is highly airline-focused. It suits students selected into a cadet or airline-partnered programme, not students looking for a flexible modular route or broad non-airline professional licence.

Airline-linked professional course

The course must be completed in one continuous programme at an ATO that is part of, or has a specific arrangement with, a commercial air transport operator.

  • Designed for ab-initio students selected for a specific airline-style pathway.
  • Combines ATPL-level theory, flight training, simulator training, MCC, UPRT elements and type-rating training.
  • Uses continuous assessment rather than separate independent licence modules.
  • Focuses on pilot flying and pilot monitoring duties in a multi-crew environment.
  • Normally leads towards operator conversion and line training with the associated airline.

NOT A MODULAR ROUTE

Less flexible than CPL(A)

The MPL(A) is not ideal for students who want to collect licences step by step, change schools freely, or keep several career options open during training.

  • Usually tied to a specific ATO and airline programme.
  • IR(A) privileges are limited to aeroplanes requiring a co-pilot unless extended separately.
  • Less suitable for general aviation, instructor, aerial work or business aviation routes.
  • If the student leaves early, credit towards lower licences depends on applicable requirements and authority approval.
  • Best suited to students whose clear goal is airline co-pilot employment through a defined operator pathway.
Important: MPL(A) is not simply an โ€œairline version of CPL(A)โ€. It is a competency-based, airline-linked licence designed around multi-crew operations and a specific type-rating environment.

STANDARD ROUTE

How the MPL(A) process usually works

The exact sequence depends on the approved course and airline partner, but most MPL programmes follow this logic.

Apply to an airline or airline-partnered ATO

The candidate usually enters through a cadet programme, airline selection process or training organisation linked to a commercial air transport operator.

Pass selection and obtain Class 1 medical

Selection normally includes aptitude testing, English assessment, technical reasoning, group exercises and interviews.

Complete ATPL-level theoretical knowledge

The MPL(A) requires theoretical knowledge appropriate to ATPL(A) level and to the relevant multi-pilot type rating.

Phase 1 โ€” Core flying skills

The student develops basic aircraft handling and single-pilot flying foundations in an aeroplane.

Phase 2 โ€” Basic

The programme introduces multi-crew concepts, standard operating procedures, instrument flying, crew communication and threat-and-error management.

The student is assessed against MPL competency units and must pass the final skill test on the relevant aircraft type or representative full flight simulator.

After licence issue and type rating, the pilot normally completes operator conversion, supervised line flying and company training.

The competent authority sets or supervises the ATPL-level examinations. The MPL programme also includes type-rating theoretical instruction and UPRT theoretical knowledge as part of the approved course.

CLASS OR TYPE RATING

What rating is obtained?

The MPL(A) course includes type-rating training for the multi-pilot turbine aeroplane used in the advanced phase of the programme.

Typical outcome: The student receives an MPL(A) together with a type rating linked to the aircraft type used in the approved airline training programme, subject to passing the required skill test and operator requirements.

The type rating has its own validity and revalidation requirements. The MPL licence does not remove the need to keep the type rating, medical certificate, recency and operator training current.

VALIDITY AND RECENCY

Does the MPL(A) expire?

The MPL(A) licence itself is not normally treated like a type rating with a fixed expiry date. The ability to use it depends on holding a valid aircraft type rating, a valid Class 1 medical, language proficiency where applicable, recent experience and operator training compliance.

Important: The associated multi-pilot type rating normally has a fixed validity period and must be revalidated by proficiency check before expiry. If it expires, renewal normally requires assessment, refresher training as required and a proficiency check.
