ENTRY AND COMPLETION PROFILE
TYPE OF FLIGHT
The PPL(A) is issued for aeroplanes. Most students train on a single-engine piston aeroplane and receive the relevant class rating after passing the skill test.
MINIMUM AGE
Training may begin earlier, but the applicant must be at least 17 when the PPL(A) is issued. The school will also apply its own minimum age for enrolment and first solo flight.
EDUCATION REQUIRED
No degree or specific school certificate is required. You must, however, pass the PPL theoretical examinations and be able to understand flight planning, navigation, weather and aircraft performance.
MEDICAL CERTIFICATE
A Class 2 medical is required to exercise PPL privileges. Obtain it before the first solo flight and preferably before making a large non-refundable payment. A valid Class 1 also meets the requirement.
PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE
The course is designed for complete beginners. Holders of an LAPL(A) or relevant experience in another aircraft category may receive credit where Part-FCL permits it.
ESTIMATED DURANTION
A full-time student may finish faster, while weekend training often takes longer. Regular lessons improve continuity and reduce the risk of needing additional revision flights.
COMPLETE ESTIMATED COST
The final price depends on aircraft rates, fuel, location and whether you finish near the 45-hour minimum. Include theory, medical, exams, equipment, landing fees and the skill test.
PREVIOUS LICENCE REQUIRED
You can enter directly as an ab-initio student. An existing LAPL(A) can shorten the upgrade route if the additional flight-time and training requirements are completed.
FINAL RESULT OBTAINED
The licence permits non-commercial flight as pilot-in-command or co-pilot on aeroplanes within the ratings held. Night, instrument and multi-engine privileges require additional training or ratings.
STANDARD ROUTE

Compare approved ATOs and DTOs, aircraft availability, instructor capacity, safety culture, contracts and the realistic cost to completion before enrolling.

Arrange the examination with an authorised AME or AeMC. Resolve any medical questions early and ensure the certificate is valid before your first supervised solo flight.

Study air law, human performance, meteorology, communications, principles of flight, operational procedures, flight performance and planning, aircraft general knowledge and navigation.

Learn aircraft handling, take-offs and landings, emergencies, navigation, radio procedures and decision-making. The 45-hour minimum includes at least 25 hours of dual instruction.

The course includes at least 10 hours of supervised solo flight, including 5 hours of solo cross-country time and one qualifying cross-country flight of at least 270 km (150 NM) with full-stop landings at two aerodromes other than the departure aerodrome.

Demonstrate the language proficiency and radio-communication privileges required for the airspace and operations you intend to use.

An authorised flight examiner will assess pre-flight preparation, normal and abnormal procedures, navigation, aircraft handling and safe decision-making.

Submit the required documents to the competent authority. Keep the relevant class rating valid and meet passenger-carrying, recency and medical requirements after licence issue.
THEORICAL KNOWLEDGE
The PPL(A) theoretical course and examinations cover nine compulsory subjects. The school may teach them in a different order or combine related topics, but each subject area must be studied and assessed.

FINAL OUTCOME
Holding the qualification does not remove medical, recency, rating-validity, proficiency-check or operator-training obligations.
Usually issued with the first PPL(A) after completing the skill test on a qualifying SEP aeroplane. Valid for 24 months.
